I personally wonder about something even more sinister than just ordinary narcissism. His preoccupation with sex, pedophilia, porn, and such is disturbing, to say the very least. There was a video online for awhile where he was shown telling a woman who was having trouble with her husband being cruel(?) to the children that she should give him more sex because he was "frustrated." I have a quote where he said that sex was the closest thing on earth to "true worship" (exit children and all single people from true worship, then)!

Which brings up a question. Have you and/or Amanda ever found or seen indication that some of these men are involved in Free Masonry? My husband brought up the subject in connection with Southern Baptist pedophiles and I have wondered about some of the others, especially since so many of the big names are Southerners, or Southern sympathizers. Just curious if you've seen anything along those lines. Since Albert Pike said that their real god was the phallic, it would make total sense. Even if Rushdoony were a Free Mason it could have filtered down. And, it would explain the similarities with Mormonism.Mary E. Stephenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09206071568335923658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4051826042602269061.post-77381932436655821442016-01-08T18:17:46.252-08:002016-01-08T18:17:46.252-08:00Third comment - this time I'm done. :-P
Well,...Third comment - this time I'm done. :-P

Well, you missed the guess on what Phillips would say was the "reason" for what he did. According to this interview, http://www.kens5.com/story/news/local/2014/06/27/10685720/ , the reason was, "I think God wanted to draw us together (meaning with his wife). I think God is doing something far bigger than us, and even our family story." So, his reason apparently is the sovereignty of God. It's God's fault. God has "big" plans for him because of this. What a hero! He "suffered" through years of being a sexual abuser so that he could have a better marriage and God could do something "BIG" in his life. (Good thing I haven't eaten dinner yet.) I admit I didn't anticipate that reason, though it makes perfect Calvinistic sense in the end.

I told my husband about the fishing rod and exploding stove (my interpretation) and he called Phillips a marketing shill. :-) Such a prestigious occupation.

You: I have heard from friends that “If God knocks on your door, he will ask to speak to the man.”

Kind of like he did to Mary when Gabriel showed up to tell her she was going to birth the Messiah? You know the part where he gave the revelation to Mary's father and then asked him to please tell her? Oh. Wait. That wasn't what happened, was it? (Oh, snap.)

You: "It sickens me that Rushdoony’s ideas have infiltrated the faith I was raised in."

It's kind of like watching an giant squid run its arms through every part of a ship, isn't it?

All the rigamarole of authority lines and structure reminded me of the "Boston Toast":
And this is good old Boston,
The home of the bean and the cod,
Where the Lowells talk only to Cabots,
And the Cabots talk only to God.

Independent Fundamental Baptists have apparently been following the "Federalist Vision" of authority for some time. IFB Pastor: "I'll follow Jesus and you follow me. When I stop following Jesus, then you stop following me." Only, he can absolutely prove that everything he does is "following Jesus." I'd like to ask someone sometime if he's a Cabot. Ahem.

You: "I find it interesting that there is are a group of very similar institutions with views like this. We call them militaries."

I heard part of a sermon by Voddie Baucham where he literally said that the wife should respond to her husband (and kids to dad?) as a soldier would! "YES, sir!" My brother met a pastor who was training his kids to answer him, "Sir! Yes, Sir!" The guys was an ex-Marine.

You: "Women cannot be allowed to go outside of their roles as mothers of the next generation of soldiers."

I have been really uncomfortable about the aggrandizement of motherhood among Christians for some time. All the cliches, adulation and blandishments feel like manipulation to get women to idolize the role of motherhood, to cast themselves as domestic goddesses - but for an ulterior motive. Yes, building "God's army" through the munitions plants of their wombs. "Militant fecundity" as Scott Brown called it.

You: "And let us make no mistake, this phrase is used intentionally to convey that the father is Christ as far as his family is concerned. He is to be their one link to God. He is to be - let us be honest - GOD to them."

Idolatry is the final sum and substance of the whole putrid mess. "What can ye make of me but God?" as one of the popes reportedly said. I have to admit the Apostle John is my favorite apostle. I love his books. 1 John 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. And I agree - the acceptance among many Christians is astonishing, to say nothing of depressing.

Excellent point on "accountability" and the divine right of kings! (Wow. So thankful I have a husband who wants mutual accountability in our marriage!)Mary E. The "righteous" slavery and abuse of the South!? There isn't an adjective strong enough to describe that!
Besides, those prediction are pretty easy to make. Most cultures do go through phases that can easily be made to fit those predictions, if I'm not mistaken.

Re: Phillips' obsession with Dabney....I can see why some people might have expected the man "relationship", no?

You: "I also suspect that there is WAY more to this story than we know now. I’d bet even money this isn’t his only affair."

My thought has been - how could a man finesse such a "lengthy relationship" without some prior experience? Most people don't dive into "affairs" without some "fooling around" first. I've wondered for some time where the other victims are. I found a number of videos showing him kissing, petting and otherwise handling other women in various situations, all under the presumable guise of "chivalry." In the video of him with Michelle Duggar when she received the "Mother of the Year" award from VF it was obvious that Jim Bob D. was uncomfortable with the way Phillips was handling his wife when J.B. took over her and kept Phillips out of arm's reach.

Re: the timing - You may address it in the second post, but somewhere I read that Lourdes Torres "confessed" the thing herself, which I assume was what forced his hand. He had been "disciplined" by his church nine months previous to his resignation at VF (something that still interests me), and he wrote a glowing article on "repentance" shortly before his "confession". Oh, he was managing the damage very carefully. He is a lawyer, after all.

You: (I’ll give another hat tip to my friend Karen, who has a great blog at thatmom.com for our mutual speculation that Christian Patriarchy will eventually embrace polygamy.)

I suspect the same. I actually had someone suggest to me that it was perfectly fine for Phillips to "love another woman because she was unmarried". At first I thought it was a Mormon, but based on another thing I ran across, and the fact that the verbiage was typically "Evangelical/Fundamental", I'm not sure who it was that made the comment. I think when it's legalize, at the very least, they will see it as the perfect way to resolve the numerous "waiting ladies" problem and as a way to help build "God's army" faster for the "war on culture".

I'm also appalled at the Baucham quote re: daughters supplying a man's "need" for the attention of a younger woman. Do any of the people who listen to/read his stuff think about what that means?!?!

Between Phillips, Gothard and Josh Duggar, it would be really great if more people would see that the system doesn't work - because it is a system, and systems don't save people. Jesus does.Mary E. Stephenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09206071568335923658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4051826042602269061.post-60748753046770735802016-01-08T14:14:02.300-08:002016-01-08T14:14:02.300-08:00It's funny, but I also ran across someone onli...It's funny, but I also ran across someone online who would have expected Doug Phillips "relationship" to be with a man. Found a strange picture of him too.

I don't consider myself a feminist (though I don't doubt some people would define me as such), and I'm a stay-at-home wife, but I find the core teaching regarding women and feminism from Phillips and his ilk to be very disgusting and even infantile. Have you seen many videos of him? He reminds me of the Sunday School show-off who has all the answers and knows he's immensely cute, so a lot of his ideas about women remind me more of a two-year-old's tantrum. You've addressed it before, but it all goes back to that ideology which William Marrion Branham so aptly iterated for the whole mob - that everything bad that happens in the world is the fault of a woman.

By the way, Sarah Faith, the daughter of Steve Schlissel (a Patriarchy darling boy and sometimes writer for Chalcedon), actually wrote an article to the effect that fathers **own** their daughters and cast it in relation to courtship specifically. She laid it out as blunt and clear as anyone could want, and according to what I read, it was published by Chalcedon. Sorry to say the web page where I found it has removed it, but I may have a copy in PDF. I critiqued the article in 2014, but I might have seen one or two others who had as well. The title of the original article is "Daddy's Girl: Courtship and A Father's Rights". (My critique is here for whatever it's worth: http://www.homemakerscorner.com/patriarchy-fathers-own-daughters.htm Warning: It is long - and has been repeatedly edited, and probably will continue to be.)

You: "I will come out and say it at the outset. I believe Douglas Phillips’ teachings are vile."

I agree. The man repulses me. Sometimes I wonder how he got such a following, when I watch him in action. Turns my stomach.

I also agree that terror makes people do mad things, but I don't think bat-s*** is the right comparison. Guano is one of the most valuable forms of manure there is. :-D

I still don't get the terror of sex. Rape,"molestation", pedophilia, wife beating, etc. - there a lot of things that are more scary than consensual fornication. My parents taught us to honor our bodies and save ourselves for marriage, but they also taught us that "mistakes" can be forgiven and people can go on and live victorious Christian lives. We knew people who had!

You: "It’s all about POWER."

Yep. First and last and in between. "Yea,hath God said?" <-- power. "by whose authority doest thou these things" <-- power. "bow down and worship me and all the kingdoms of the world shall be thine" <-- power. "I will be like the most High" <-- power.

Another aspect that I feel strongly influences this terror of sex is "religious scrupulosity". You might be interested in Googling that. At the risk of stealing my own thunder, since I intend to write on this issue, I will say that I suffered from this myself for several years in my late teens and early twenties. One of the basic problems with this thought process is that we need to be absolutely pristine in order to get God's approval, blessing, love, etc. This leads to excessive forms of self-examination and worrying over the behavior of others. In my case I was an excessive apologizer and older sister supervisor. Christina Rossetti may have suffered from this herself due to the influences of the Oxford Movement. I read that it was said she would pick up pieces of paper off the street lest the name of God should be on them and be walked on, or some such thing. This is the less dangerous kind of obsession that scrupulosity can lead to. I believe we see some of the more horrible forms exemplified for us in Biblical Patriarchy. My understanding is that scrupulosity is more well known in other groups such as Roman Catholics, Mormons and Orthodox Judaism.Mary E. I am in my 30's, and encountered a man in church who was quite obvious about his having a speedy timeline when it comes to getting married - like, wanting to get married in under a year, 6 months preferably, and then start a family post-haste - that kind of speedy. This is all conversation on a first date, and I simply wasn't up for that much pressure so I was done after the third outing with him. My dad (who hates talking on the phone) actually picked up the extension to share his opinion, which was along the lines of "That guy has issues, you decided wisely." Run-to-the-alter guy did find a young lady and they married last month, hopefully they both know the seriousness of the commitment they've entered into and will have the strength to do the work required to make a marriage all that it can and should be.

I do wonder about the likelihood of Phillips or anyone else who might be in a similar hypocritical position, to ever actually "come clean" and acknowledge every last detail of their transgressions - in a non-trite and sincerely repentant way. Obviously this guy will consider such an accounting to be a danger to his ability to profit, and likely doesn't think it's necessary because "Why should a man have to explain himself to those under his dominion?"...someday, God will have him facing some hard truths and judgment, much like vengeance, is for the Lord. If Phillips is lucky, he might see where he's done wrong, while he's still alive on this earth to begin efforts to make amends. I just wouldn't count on it.

My parents both spent 40 years in teaching; my brother and I went to a Christian private school for most of our elementary school years, and then started in the local public schools where we spent the rest of our school years, the change being due to the significant distance and expense involved with continuing to attend private schools. Even though they were teachers themselves, I think my parents felt that the interaction with other kids that we'd have attending public school would better prepare us for the time when we ventured out into the world. Looking back at how much of a culture shock it was going from private to public, I'm glad that it happened then instead of my parents waiting till high school or not at all...if that were the case I don't know if I'd have made it through community college without freaking, much less get through a bachelors program. Sheltering kids too much only makes them (or at least many of them) want to rebel with the first hint of freedom that comes along. I hope to post about this in the future. I was a pretty awkward kid in Jr. High too. And yes, I can remember my first crushes (although not always the names - I'm getting old) and some crazy emotions. At some point, though, rather than developing beyond the childish crush into a consideration of women as actual people, he went in to full narcissism mode. It's hard to know how much was a personality disorder, and how much was the poisonous philosophy. It's like a chicken and egg thing. Which came first? Libby Anne gets that right.

However, especially the description of his younger experiences, it seems his issue is shyness coupled with a strong imagination. I remember early crushes names, particulars of specific interactions with them, and the googley-eyed feelings of extreme emotion that went along with them. Maybe some men find these experiences stronger than others. These are early experiences which go along with chemical highs which should make it no surprise the synapses associated with the events are particularly strong.

It's not the memory, but what you do with it that makes it lustful.

So, I'm inclined to give awkward young Mike the benefit of the doubt, mostly because I think I know what he was feeling then.

That he completely failed to grasp the purpose of marriage and focused so much on the sexual aspect and made no consideration for Debi's feelings those days, even after she confronted him with them is the most disturbing part of the story for me. That doesn't just smack of extreme dominating sexism, but the fact that he commented that his brother didn't act that way indicates he doesn't understand or empathize with other humans in general, not just women.

So yes, it was disturbing, but Libby Anne does herself no credit judging so severly the early years of a boy who was clearly struggling and not receiving much direction from his parents on how to relate to other people, and young women in particular. What Mike became as an adult does not somehow make his early years worthy of such judgment.Matthewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18295376529984490119noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4051826042602269061.post-18982502429597292412014-02-02T07:36:53.181-08:002014-02-02T07:36:53.181-08:00I've deleted several comments by this anonymou...I've deleted several comments by this anonymous commenter because they were full of name calling and personal attacks.
