Thank you for recommending it. I haven't laughed so hard over a book for a long time, with all due respect to P.G. Wodehouse. :-)Mary E. It's just more of the "females too busy chit-chatting to pay attention" sort of thing than a mean-spirited joke about women. But it does seem dated. (Although, honestly, it would fit right in in the 1950s or even '80s, I am sad to say.) I'll have to look up the Fairholme book. Thanks for the recommendation. Lower class women were "allowed" to do all sorts of laborious things.Mary E. I'll have to see about downloading it onto my Kindle. If I really like it I will probably buy a hard copy.

It brought to mind a kids' book that my family had years ago called "Esmeralda Ahoy!" by Elisabeth Fairholme. It is the fictional British story of four siblings who, left to themselves over the holidays, decide to take their sailboat down the Thames to the sea. As I recall it was written in good old Enid Blyton style and I quite enjoyed it as a kid. :-) Your family might enjoy it.Mary E.
