I’m wondering if you could offer some views on the experience of those who arrived at Ellis Island, as this is often referred to by many claiming their family arrived legally. Had those showing up at Ellis Island gone through any more “application process” than those families we separate at our southern border? Did they have invitations or did they just show up with the desire to become citizens, no different than those arriving from Mexico today? john from mundeleinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08308551509381522621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4051826042602269061.post-24485926389818892562018-01-25T10:45:04.740-08:002018-01-25T10:45:04.740-08:00You are right. I saw the reference to foreign soldiers that stayed in the various Naturalization laws throughout the whole period, and missed that the French were targeted by the acts as a whole. I'll edit and clarify that one. Adams and the Frederalists were pro-British. The US and France were fighting the Quasi War at sea. Jefferson was pro-French and Adams’ enemy. Many French revolutionaries left France as a result of the Terror. A few of them were newspapermen who attacked the authoritarian tendencies of the Federalists. Their 5 year naturalization period was ending and the Federalists were afraid that they would vote (and run for office) as Democratic-Republicans.

Keep up the good work!

PhyllisDr Phylhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01783970354936609266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4051826042602269061.post-6486574521967947092018-01-23T20:48:01.106-08:002018-01-23T20:48:01.106-08:00"I'm beginning to think that Evangelicali..."I'm beginning to think that Evangelicalism is an existential threat to racial equality in America."

Sadly,I fear you're right.Valhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03169879181467099939noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4051826042602269061.post-64533226492395781852018-01-23T08:29:48.096-08:002018-01-23T08:29:48.096-08:00This is great information! We don't deal with them as much now, but I have no doubt the Roy Moores of the world would love to limit voting to white people - and he sure seemed fond of slavery.

Don't forget either that 80% of white Evangelicals STILL voted for Moore. I'm beginning to think that Evangelicalism is an existential threat to racial equality in America. Seeing as most of my work with homeschoolers is based on the 14th Amendment and its subsequent jurisprudence, I thought that was a horrible idea. And that's just one of the 17 he wanted to get rid of (although I'd argue it's probably the most important non-Bill of Rights one).Darrenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04685777538999248205noreply@blogger.com
