And much of that is due to my parents choosing which aspects they felt were worthwhile and which were not, and our lack of proximity with other, more extreme, adherents to these belief systems.

I'm also very grateful that I've recognized, and latched onto, problems with the graceless legalism that pervade much of these groups, and so use that as a basis to seek to convince others of the problems with their theologies.Matt Bedfordhttp://www.ipandora.netnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4051826042602269061.post-79772747663593727722013-03-04T15:40:06.551-08:002013-03-04T15:40:06.551-08:00Wow! However, I don't think she seeks forgiveness from God either. I mean, later she suggests running away with Dimmesdale, so I guess I can't see her as only a victim here.
Good note on legalism. There is definitely a line we must walk between seeing sin as sin and holding one another accountable, and becoming legalistic and isolating others for just differences or things they can't help.BerlinerinPoethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06853762912371387793noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4051826042602269061.post-47423870974258410002013-03-01T13:52:53.125-08:002013-03-01T13:52:53.125-08:00Wow! I wanted to go on and on about this book but made myself keep it short so Carrie wouldn't accuse me of trying to take over her blog. :) There is so much in this post (which I thoroughly enjoyed reading), I hardly know where to begin a response.

I find your parallels between the legalistic sect of Puritans and the patriarchal movement quite interesting. It is my understanding, however, that all Puritans shouldn't necessarily be lumped into the same group. I am studying government with my teens right now and we are finding it interesting to see the differences between the colonies' governing documents as some tried to legislate personal relationships with the Creator while others acknowledged God as Creator while leaving personal beliefs up to the individual (rooted in Luther's Creator/Redeemer distinction). (Massachusetts, of course, being of the former category).

You have some experiences with the patriarchy movement I simply don't have. I was not homeschooled, am the only one in my family choosing this option of education for my children, and I am watching the movement from a distance. There are some aspects that scare me; at the same time, I appreciate the family-centeredness and call for husbands/fathers to take their God-given leadership role. It seems we humans are so inclined toward extremes and the pendulum swings back and forth. I do appreciate you sharing your perspective from your experiences that I do not have as I strive to find the middleground. :)

Madonna vs. Slut. How very intriguing! I'll be pondering this idea further.

Thanks so much for sharing.Shonyahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04310547848215492736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4051826042602269061.post-20430267888604810252013-03-01T10:50:40.127-08:002013-03-01T10:50:40.127-08:00I came here from readingtoknow.com
